Memory Loss

Occasional forgetfulness is common, as it is a by-product of your brain’s continuous efforts to sort, file, and prioritize the incessant barrage of information it receives. Memory loss has also long been considered a normal part of the aging process. However, recent research suggests that there may be very little nerve cell loss with normal aging, and that early memory loss IS associated with loss of brain cells.

Normal brain cell diminishment is half percent a year as we age, but cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease increase the rate of atrophy. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify and aggressively address any signs and symptoms of early memory loss. It is also wise to promote healthy nerve cells and neurotransmitter and hormone balance before you begin to experience memory loss and cognitive decline.

There are many possible causes of memory loss, including medications, drug and alcohol use, environmental toxins, hormone changes, stress, head injuries, and sleep deprivation. Some of the more serious age-related memory loss causes include mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and other types of dementia. Fortunately, many types of memory loss can be prevented or reversed.

Protect Your Brain

Because no prescription medications have ever been shown to protect the brain, prevent memory loss and cognitive decline, or modify the disease course of Alzheimer’s and other neuro-degenerative disorders, the cornerstones of our Therapeutic Brain System to accomplish these vital goals are lifestyle and nutraceuticals.

Our approach to accomplish these goals is as follows:

  • “Seal and heal” your likely leaky gut
  • “Right-size” inflammation
  • Balance neurotransmitters and hormones (thyroid, vitamin D, insulin, and reproductive)
  • Replenish adrenal stores
  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Eliminate environmental, interpersonal, dietary, and metabolic toxins

Lifestyle Basics

  • Optimize your diet. Try to stick to a low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory, hormonally correct diet that limits refined carbohydrates, simple sugars, gluten, and red meat.
  • Regulate your sleep. Aim for ~8 hours per night. Fall asleep faster; stay asleep longer.
  • Reduce stress. Interpersonal strife and hectic pace of living are two of the most potent contemporary contributors to brain inflammation.
  • Move.  Regular exercise and non-exercise activity, along with proper diet and adequate sleep, are the best ways to enhance cognition (and mood, it turns out) and prevent brain rot.
  • Engage. Maintaining social interactions is an important part of maintaining a healthy mind. While loneliness has been shown to be a factor in Alzheimer’s disease, keeping healthy social interactions can reduce stress levels and promote cognition and memory.

Dietary Supplements and Nutraceuticals

Supplements and nutraceuticals should be considered complements to diet and lifestyle. Those we emphasize include Methyl folate, Methyl cobalamine, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), Curcumin, Ashwagandha, Vitamin D3, Alpha lipoic acid, Resveratrol, Gingko biloba, Omega-3 fatty acids, Acetyl-L-carnitine, Phosphatylserine, and Probiotics.

As the list of potentially beneficial nutraceutical ingredients can boggle the mind, we have formulated and incorporated products that combine as many of these key ingredients as possible. Please follow the link to learn more about our Core Cognitive Cocktail.

If you can choose only one of the products in our Core Cognitive Cocktail, consider FolaNac, our best-selling memory supplement. Studies indicate that high total folate intake is associated with reduced risk of AD, and may help to protect against AD. Other studies show that optimum levels of vitamin B12 and folate are necessary to protect you from cognitive decline. It is for this reason that the two are combined in FolaNac.
